Eles testaram bactanãrias sensaveis a antibia³ticos em meios de crescimento sem antibia³ticos . Mas eles permitiram que essa bactanãria recebesse HGT de outras bactanãrias resistentes a antibia³ticos .
“Isso também poderia explicar por que os pacientes ainda tem bactanãrias resistentes aos antibia³ticos muito depois de terminarem o tratamento com antibia³ticos e por que as bactanãrias desenvolvem resistência rapidamente, mesmo quando não foram expostas ao antibia³tico antesâ€.
"Usamos o sequenciamento do genoma completo para confirmar se os genes para resistência a antibia³ticos estavam se espalhando nas populações, mesmo sem seleção", disse o Dr. McDonald.
“Mais tarde, desafiamos nossas populações evoluadas com altas concentrações de antibia³ticos.
"Descobrimos que as populações que receberam HGT podem sobreviver ao tratamento com antibia³ticos, mas as populações de controle que não receberam HGT não sobreviveram."
